In this volume, Helmut Hilz, the director of the library of the “Deutsches Museum” in Munich, offers an overview of the history of the book: starting with the question of what a book actually is, the first written documents in the Near East and antiquity, the development of manuscripts and book printing over the centuries, to contemporary “books” such as e-books or audio books. He also considers aspects of print production, book art and ways of illustration. In this way, Hilz traces the most important steps in the development of the book medium and also discusses the question of whether the printed book still has a future.
