Thomas Kaufmann: Wie die Generation Luther die erste Medienrevolution entfesselte (Munich: C.H. Beck 2022).

book cover

Luther and his contemporaries were the digital natives of their time. They fought for a reformation of the church, used the media of the 16th century such as broadsheets and pamphlets specifically for their own causes and to fight their opponents, and marketed themselves. But more than that, they also initiated a step towards a changed world: study, research with encyclopaedias and critical apparatus, printing, access to Bibles and censorship had been permanently changed by them, as Kaufmann (historian of religion at the University of Göttingen) shows in his work.
