The focus of the workshop “Forum Wissenschafts- und Buchgeschichte” is on the 20th century. The event is supported by the Internationale Buchwissenschaftliche Gesellschaft and by the Philosophische Fakultät (Faculty of Philosophy) and the Institute for German Literature of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
The workshop “Forum Wissenschafts- und Buchgeschichte” brings together young scholars with a focus on the history of science, book history and literary studies in the 20th century and will be held in Berlin in September 2018. The aim of the event is an interdisciplinary exchange in a thematic field that is coming under the spotlight through recent advances in digitisation, both in the sources of research in the humanities and in their own literary production and communication. Which publication formats were relevant for authors, publishers and readers during the 20th century? To what extent did publication cultures in the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences change during this period and what role did media competition play in the respective fields? These questions will be addressed in a public evening lecture, which will focus on the German publisher Rowohlt’s nonfiction paperback series “Deutsche Enzyklopädie”. The participants of the forum will expand and intensify discussions in sessions on publication conventions, scientific publications and the book industry, in which they present case studies from their individual research projects, which in turn will be discussed in chaired panels. A discussion panel on recent positions in the history of science and sociology and a closing commentary frame the event by relating sociological and historical positions to each other and to the lectures.
