Three participation grants:

The Recurrence of the Work: Contemporary Perspectives on the Category of the Work in the Arts

(Original title: Wiederkehr des Werks? Internationales und interdisziplinäres Symposium zur Gegenwart des Werkbegriffs)

The category of the work has been heavily criticized in the humanities in general and literary studies in particular in the last 50 years. Therefore, it has been denied that the „work“ still is a helpful and pertinent concept in dealing adequately with cultural objects. Over the recent years, the discussion in the humanities, however, has promoted the concept of the work to a central position within literary and cultural theory. It turns out that, after all, the „work“ still seems to be a very productive category of cultural and literary analysis. The international and interdisciplinary conference on the concept of the work will therefore examine the current prospects of the category of the work. The symposium „The Recurrence of the Work“, which will be held from October 21st to October 23rd 2015 in Schloss Herrenhausen, Hannover (Germany), accordingly will foster the reflection on the forms and functions of the concept of the work in the humanities of the 21st century. In this context, we would like to invite three doctoral students with research interests in this field to take part in the conference. The students will receive travel grants amounting to 200 euros to cover parts of the costs related to the participation in the symposium. The application should include a short CV and a letter specifying the interest in the symposium. Please send your application by 1 March 2015 to the group of organizers.
